Conservation Tips

Energy Conservation Tips

  1. Turn off your monitor when you are away from your PC, and both the CPU and the monitor if you will be away for two or more hours.
  2. Keep the refrigerator full. The fuller the refrigerator, the less cold air escapes when the door is open, so your fridge does not have to work as hard to stay cool.
  3. Nothing is more energy efficient for cooking than your microwave. It uses two-thirds less energy than your stove.
  4. Use extension cords properly, do not overload them. They can get hot enough to burn.
  5. If you are using your air conditioner, increase the temperature setting and use your ceiling fans.
  6. Make sure all work done to your home’s electrical wiring or equipment is done by a licensed electrician.
  7. Unplug electronic devices and chargers when they are not in use. Most electronics use electricity even when switched “off”.
  8. Wash your clothes in cold water if you can. Some detergents are now specially designed to work just as well in cold water as in hot water
  9. Check and clean the elements on your water heaters and reduce the temperature setting.
  10. Line dry clothes whenever you can.
  11. When using the washer and dryer always have full loads of clothing.
  12. Try to coordinate your ironing so that you are not using the iron daily.
  13. Use energy efficient fluorescent light bulbs. One 15watt energy efficient bulb emits just as much light as a 60 watt bulb and uses less than half the energy to do so.
  14. If you have a pool, make sure you have a timer that only runs the pool pump for 4-6 hours daily. You can check with your pool maintenance personnel for the time best suited for your pool.
