Grand Bahama Power Company recently gave financial assistance to the Special Olympics team in Grand Bahama to help facilitate training programs for their athletes. The goal of the organization is to provide year round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Currently the Grand Bahama Special Olympic team works with just over 70 athletes ranging from ages 9 to 47 years old. “We are so grateful for the donation from the Grand Bahama Power Company because without these funds we would have been unable to continue with our summer training program,” said Loretta Parris, Special Olympics Grand Bahama Chairman. She added that the program has suffered a decline in donations and has been severely challenged with fund-raising efforts due to the state of the economy.

“GBPC is pleased to assist the Special Olympics Program in Grand Bahama. Organizations like the Special Olympics make a tremendous difference in the lives of the athletes and their families,” commented Philcher Grant-Farquharson, GBPC Corporate Communications. “This is the part of the job that I love the most when you get to help these young athletes achieve their goals. I have had the honour of meeting some of the athletes and they embody the true spirit of courageousness, resilience, and perseverance.”

Mrs Parris noted that the program has determined and very motivated athletes and coaches, as well as selfless volunteers but is in dire need of funding and donations from corporate citizens and the community. “We pay to have our athletes bussed to training every Saturday as well as provide them with snacks. For a lot of them that participate, this is the only outing and chance for social and sporting activity they will have for the week.” To find out more about Special Olympics or to inquire about becoming a sponsor, contact the organization at specialolympics@hotmail.com.
