Grand Bahama Power employees benefit from exchange program, skills training

Grand Bahama Power Company (GBPC) is partnering with its sister companies in the region to establish a mentorship and employee exchange program, supporting the personal growth of Bahamians and developing skills to enhance the Company’s operational efficiencies.  At the same time, the company has rolled out a competency-based training (CBT) program that will hone the skills of its key tradespeople including linesmen and plant operators.

GBPC employee participants will learn from the expertise of Emera Caribbean Limited (ECL) colleagues in critical fields such as power generation and transmission and distribution (T&D).  In keeping with GBPC’s goals of delivering safe, efficient electricity service to customers and providing a rewarding work place for employees, the program is bringing highly experienced professionals and tradespeople to Grand Bahama while sharing the expertise of Bahamians at ECL’s other utilities.  

“This has been a great opportunity for me to acquire new skills and share my knowledge with my co-workers.  I’m thrilled to be part of this program”, said Bernard McKinney, Mechanic/Welder, and the first of several GBPC employees to participate in the program.  Mr. McKinney, a 14 year veteran at GBPC, is sharing his extensive knowledge while gaining from the expertise of others in diesel engine and pump repair during his six month secondment at the Barbados Light & Power Company (BL&P).  In parallel, BL&P Mechanical Engineer Jonathan Griffith and Substation Technician Wade Boyce are currently on island and bring their combined 41 years of industry experience to GBPC’s generation and T&D departments.  

The ECL exchange program will broaden in the future to include other critical functions and utilities under the ECL umbrella, such as Dominica Electricity Services, and GBPC looks forward to continuing its participation in this program.  

GBPC’s CBT program differs from other types of training as it focuses on learning concrete skills in great detail, which is critical for the utility’s highly skilled trades. The four year CBT program, together with the Carilec Training and Certification program for linemen, will enable GBPC employees to hone their skills and learn new competencies which will position them for a successful future in the evolving industry.  

GBPC recognizes the depth of skills and talent right here in Grand Bahama and believes that through these investments, it’s employees and future leaders will be well equipped to effectively serve customers.
