Grand Bahama Power Company: Preserving the Beauty of the Bahamas

Recognizing the importance of sustainable development in the communities we serve worldwide, Mirant initiated its first international Wildlife at Work program on Grand Bahama Islands, the Bahamas. Mirant holds a 55 percent economic interest in Grand Bahama Power Company Limited. Its generating plant is situated on 46 acres of land in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, and provides the energy needs for the entire island and a few adjacent cays.

Seeing the opportunity to capitalize on the need to preserve the natural resources of the Bahamas and an ecotourism trend sweeping the island, several employees approached management and proposed an employee-led land preservation effort. They identified the wetland area adjacent to the plant as a prime wildlife habitat that could shelter a variety of species including egrets, songbirds, migratory animals, aquatic life, and plants. This led to partnering with the Wildlife Habitat Council to identify opportunities. Initial efforts will focus on mangrove reforestation and conservation, as will as creating habitats for fish, crustaceans, endangered and protected birds and animals that pollinate plants.

The Grand Bahama Power Company hopes to inspire an island-wide conservation effort, enlisting support from the College of the Bahamas, the Bahamas National Trust, local ecotourism organizations, and conservationists. We plan to use the wetland as en educational site for local residents and students.
